Targeting articulation or phonological processes with books is not new. Over the course of this blog series, I am going to give you the blueprints for how to make your own literacy and articulation kits. The first book in the series is an oldie but a goodie and one of the kids’ favorites: Good Night Gorilla. If you are just landing on this post you may want to head here and read about Lit/Artic kits and what they are.

The book : Good Night, Gorilla

The Critter Clinic Toy I took all of the accessories that came with them and used them elsewhere. We keep this kit dedicated to this activity but you certainly don’t have to do that. This toy has the perfect amount of pens or zoo enclosures for each animal in the book to have a space.

Animals: I am sure some of you have some plastic zoo animals in the far reaches of your toy closet. You can scavenge through them and find the following animals to add to your “zoo”. In case you don’t here is a list of what you need.

Gorilla , Elephant, giraffe, Lion All three of these animals are in this assortment.

Small mouse The Gorilla needs a partner in crime.

Hyena

Armadillo This is the Armadillo that I have. It is comically large compared to the other animals. This assortment of animals is more expensive but a better scale.

good night gorilla

That’s it! Now if you really wanted to make this activity on a budget you could print your own animals. Print and laminate the animals and place them in the correct zoo enclosures.

If you are not familiar with the story here is a brief review. The inattentive zookeeper says goodnight to all the animals. Unbeknownst to him, the gorilla has stolen his keys and is letting all the animals out of their cages. There are so many fun language targets in this story it is really a great fun activity to target all sorts of goals.
